THE HERO IN HERONEMUS
It all started when…
In January of 2015, Steven Heronemus, a sailor who has lived with ALS, for over 10 years, joined forces with SEAS to launch an adaptive sailing initiative with a focus on the disabilities rendered by ALS. It's ultimate goal? To help those with life altering disabilities experience the freedom and joy of sailing.
For those who have been following the Steve Heronemus story this video tells the tale of his latest voyage. It’s more than sailing, more than overcoming challenges, it’s about three generations bonding through sailing.
SEAS would like to take a moment to express its collective sadness over the passing of Steve Heronemus in September 2022. As many of you know, Steve was instrumental in the evolution of SEAS adaptive sailing program and in the design of the “Katie”, SEAS adaptive boat. While suffering through the challenges of ALS, Steve was able to control the boat through bite switches and limited hand controls allowing him to continue to enjoy sailing, even with limited mobility. Steve’s contributions to SEAS adaptive program have enabled SEAS to offer this program to many people with limited abilities, allowing them to enjoy the beauty of a reclaimed independence and realizing the benefits of those things that sailing has to offer.
